Pair of 1980’s Robert Hargrave Sitting Figure Sculptures/ Bookends
Used as book ends or as free standing sculptures atop a mantel or shelf, we styled this pair without books to emphasize how beautiful they are when they stand alone. This pair of figures are composed of Russian Birch and Indonesian Lauan laminated plywood. Robert Hargrave is a wood sculptor that specializes in working with laminated plywood. Plywood is not a material most artists gravitate toward, however finding ways to transform an unglamorous material into a beautiful piece of art is Hargrave’s intention. Hargrave layers different kinds of plywoods, alternating them so that when he carves into them, the variations in color and texture are revealed. The end result of this practice by Hargrave is a piece of art, full of depth and fluid movement. This pair is in excellent condition and have been recently restored with a hard wax oil treatment.
